About
In 2003 several members of SCV Princess Anne Camp 1993 (now Camp 484), decided there was a need to form a new MOS&B chapter in Virginia Beach. Membership in the SCV camp had grown from its inception a year earlier to over 50 members. Several had ancestors who were officers. So the stage was set to proceed with a charter application. After consideration the prospective members chose a name that reflected the historical makeup of the area and also honored local ancestors. Princess Anne County was chosen as part of the name. Likewise, the 15th Virginia Cavalry, which was composed of several Princess Anne County companies, was incorporated as well.
The members also searched for someone who was recognized as a local hero and a standout among the officers who served the Confederacy, as well as Princess Anne County and it’s surrounding areas. Major Edgar E. Burroughs served with the 15th Virginia Cavalry until 1862 when he resigned his commission due to poor health. In June of 1863, through Major Oscar F. Baxter, Jr., MD, he was authorized by the Secretary of War to organize a company of partisan rangers to harass the Union forces around Princess Anne county and in the Norfolk area. Known as the Burroughs’ Battalion, Partisan Rangers, they were very successful throughout Princess Anne County, Currituck County, North Carolina, and along the Atlantic seaboard of both states.
The charter was presented on March 29, 2004, by Virginia Society Commander Clarke Magruder. Past Commander Kenneth Harris, a charter member, is a direct descendant of Major Burroughs and was instrumental in establishing the Chapter. We continue to grow and hope that you will consider honoring your Confederate officer ancestor by joining us.
